As president of Monte Hewett Homes, Monte Hewett possesses 18 years of experience building homes in Atlanta. Recently, Hewett took the time to answer some questions posed to him by Newcomer Magazine about his business and its place in the city's real estate market.

Why did you want to become a builder?
I graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Construction Management and started out as a builder for Highland Homes in Texas in the early '80s. I loved being outdoors, so the idea of working outdoors was one of the aspects that attracted me to homebuilding.

What made you want to start your business in Atlanta?
In 1988, I was asked by the president of Highland to head up a new division in the Atlanta market, and served as vice president/division manager for 12 years. I enjoyed building in Atlanta, and decided that I would be happy raising my family here. When Highland decided to exit the Atlanta market, I transitioned the company, product and a majority of the employees into Monte Hewett Homes.

What unique qualities does Monte Hewett Homes bring to potential homebuyers?
We build solid, lasting relationships with our customers and offer excellent customer service before and long after the sale. Our Customer Service Department stays in touch with homeowners from the day they close on their home through a prescheduled 30-Day Service appointment and their Anniversary Service visit. We build quality homes and stand behind our work every step of the way.

What services do you provide to meet the needs of relocating buyers?
Documents, contracts and design selections are available electronically to both the homebuyer and the onsite builders, making communication with buyers who are out of town a streamlined process. Photos of their home's progress during the building cycle are sent via e-mail when requested.

What are some of the new developments your company is working on now?
Our most exciting new project is the West Village in Smyrna, a new live/shop/play community covering more than 65 acres and featuring 1,100 total units of residential and retail space. Monte Hewett Homes has begun construction on the first of 72 single-family, craftsman-style homes and 115 three-story, two-car garage townhomes.
