Portrait of a Pioneer
Hedgewood Properties: Pam Sessions

Pam Sessions
In 1985, Pam Sessions and her husband, Don Donnelly, founded Hedgewood Properties, an Atlanta-based development company whose neighborhoods feature a strong sense of community and a wide-range of classic home styles. Recently, Pam took some time to discuss with Newcomer her experience as a homebuilder and the vision behind Hedgewood’s award-winning communities.

What do you feel is important in homebuilding today, and how is this reflected in your developments?
Many factors are driving change in the way people choose to live. Our changing demographics, as well as the rising costs of housing, are creating a demand for many different types of homes as well as a wide range of prices in convenient neighborhoods. We need to be conscious of the impact that our population and growth patterns have on our natural resources and eco systems and balance the economic, social and environmental impacts of daily life.

Our neighborhoods should provide a mix of uses, such as stores, services and office space along with a wide variety of home styles and prices. In addition, trees, parks, green and recreational space in a safe environment are vital to a community. By placing these conveniences in close proximity with a connected network of streets and green space, as Hedgewood does in its neighborhoods, people are given the choice of getting in their car or walking. Children can grow up with a sense of independence and have responsibility for not only themselves, but also for their neighborhood and  community, and parents are afforded the gift of time  to spend with those they love when services are conveniently available closer to home.

What is your background, and how has your experience contributed to your success?
Prior to beginning my homebuilding career, I received my BFA from the University of Georgia, studied photography with Ansel Adams and worked with landscape photographer Dave Bohn. My experience with and interest in art allows me to focus on design in every home that Hedgewood builds.

How has being a female homebuilder influenced the design of your homes?
Women are often the family caretakers—whether for a family of one or four, or even for extended family members—and are also increasingly working outside the home, so it is important to design homes and neighborhoods that work for women. Such design is inclusive by nature and extends to the needs of the whole family, because a woman’s design includes quality of life for everyone in her life.

Hedgewood Properties has been recognized both locally and nationally. Tell us about this.
Hedgewood Properties has been fortunate to receive numerous awards, including Builder of the Year by the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association, the coveted National Builder of the Year award from Professional Builder magazine, and the Argon Award in 2004, given in honor of Hedgewood’s commitment to environmental stewardship. In 2005, Better Homes and Gardens chose Vickery as the neighborhood and Hedgewood the builder of “America’s Home.”
