Julia and Jeremy Fare of Woodward Rhodes
Newcomer about their boutique real estate development company in Atlanta. Woodward Rhodes, which began as a renovation business 10 years ago, today focuses on developing entire properties within their respective historical context, including new construction, renovation, custom build projects and neighborhoods.

Authenticity, originality and history are said to be the defining tenets of Woodward Rhodes. How do you instill these in each of your projects?
Authenticity, originality and a respect for history are more than defining tenets of Woodward Rhodes, they are personal commitments. We are both active and committed preservationists and serve on numerous boards dedicated to preserving Atlanta’s history. The exploration of a neighborhood’s history, including the people and places that contribute to its uniqueness, makes each project more interesting for us. We then pass that knowledge on to our clients, who discover they are not just purchasing a home, but developing a respect for the place and the neighborhood they have chosen.

Woodward Rhodes does not begin each project with preconceived notions of what relics will be included. On a very basic level, we know that paint palettes, surfaces and materials are defining, but we need to understand more about the individual project, its place and neighborhood, before prescribing finishes. Projects we have recently completed included historically relevant details such as mailboxes designed by the original landowner’s living relative, hand stamped wallpaper from an appropriate historical reproduction collection, antique vanities, salvaged flooring, reproduced windows and heirloom plants.

What is your personal relationship/background with the city of Atlanta, and where does Woodward Rhodes develop?
Though neither of us are from Atlanta, in our over 10 years of residency here we feel a deep connection to its past, present and future. What we do is personal—it requires us to know Atlanta, its neighborhoods, its people. Our focus on intown properties began because of our personal passion for intown living. We are currently developing on Glenwood Avenue in East Lake, overlooking the East Lake Golf Club, but are always considering projects around town. Presently, we are pursuing several exciting opportunities in Druid Hills, Ansley Park and Buckhead. We were recently honored with Woodward Rhodes’ selection to be the Developer/Builder of the 2007 Atlanta magazine Dream Home. In a city with so many quality builders from which to choose, we are thrilled that our properties are considered to meet or exceed the “Dream Home” standard.

What special qualities does Woodward Rhodes bring to potential homebuyers?
Woodward Rhodes offers its clients an opportunity to connect with their home. We do this by sharing the methodology behind each home with our clients. Why was this fixture chosen? Why this paint color? Since our work is so studied and deliberate, and since we take the time to share this knowledge with our clients, they develop a deep understanding and connection to the home and its neighborhood.
