Coweta County
County Description Established in 1826 by settlers migrating westward from the Carolinas and Virginia, Coweta's initial fortunes were raised from investors in the railroad and from cotton farming during the mid-1800s. Evidence of this prosperity may be seen to date in the architecture of Coweta's historic antebellum, Victorian and classical revival style homes. These homes were spared destruction during the civil war because many served as hospitals serving both union and confederate soldiers. Several areas of this diverse county are revered on the National Historic Register. Located 40 minutes south of downtown Atlanta in the southwest quadrant of metropolitan Atlanta, Coweta is known for its classic southern hospitality, famous literary residents, as the film-shooting locale of many top-grossing movies, historical landmarks and for its positive business environment. Over 8,500 inhabitants are employed by Coweta's varied industrial base-comprising close to 100 industries. The area serves as the southeastern distribution center for K-Mart and Eckerd Drugs. The site of the first North American manufacturing plant for Yamaha Motor Company, Ltd, Shenandoah Industrial and Business Park, located at I-85 and GA 34, is one of the largest business parks in metropolitan Atlanta. Affordable housing as well as vast cultural and educational opportunities attract families from around the world to call Newnan home. Named in memoriam of General Daniel Newnan, former Georgia Secretary of State and a United States Congressman, Newnan was established as the county seat in 1828. City streets, named after notable historic Americans, are laid out in a nine-block grid pattern, centralized around the business district's downtown courthouse. Immortalized in the book Murder in Coweta County, the courthouse has been sited in many movies and television programs. Presently, the downtown square is inhabited by locally owned restaurants and merchants, which serve Newnan's population of over 16,200 and area visitors. Senoia While historians banter about how the name of this quaint, rural town originated, history is clear on Senoia's importance as a cross location of the Savannah, Griffin and North Alabama railroads during the post civil war era-transporting products such as cotton and peaches. Incorporated as a city in 1866, Senoia's local attractions include a multitude of bed and breakfast inn's, antique shops, historic tours, and Riverwood Studios-the locale where Fried Green Tomatoes and The War were filmed.
